A modern building with classic Victorian and Edwardian proportions, complimenting the area’s wider vernacular, 247 Wimbledon is constructed of handmade Ibstock bricks and Portland stone, with ample glazing to maximise natural light to the interior.
247 Wimbledon offers 31,107 sq ft of brand-new high-quality office space over ground floor, basement and four upper floors. The reception is a multi-functional space with reception facilities, a cafe, workstations and a lounge area. All the floors are light and spacious with large windows spanning the front and rear of the building. A series of garden terraces cascade down the rear facade, providing every floor with fantastic outside space. The building has been thoughtfully designed to cater to all the needs of the modern workspace, the latest technologies and engineering have been employed to create an energy efficient and pleasant work environment.
Central to 247 Wimbledon’s stunning aesthetic is Ibstock’s
handmade Swanage bricks. Bricks manufactured at the Swanage facility are handmade on site using locally sourced clay, a process which gives each brick a unique sense of character. Hand thrown into traditional sanded moulds, each brick is imbued with the unique characteristics of its maker. One of the few genuine handmade brickworks in the UK, the intricacies of the brickmaking process at Swanage guarantees a product which cannot be replicated by any machine.
Following a visit to the Swanage facility, Emrys Architects worked with Ibstock’s team of in-house design experts to ensure the product met the exacting needs of the development. This included a rigorous testing regimen centred on the drying process, and modifications to the product to achieve the design intent for each specials, specifically scalloped bricks and fan shaped bricks.
The distinctive, classical colour of the brick was also a key consideration for Emrys when specifying Ibstock. It was a planning requirement from the outset of the project for the bricks used to be red, something which initially drew Emrys to Swanage. The fact the bricks were handmade, manufactured relatively locally to Wimbledon and of high quality were all added benefits.
The finished result is a truly stunning building which blends timeless design with undoubtable modernity to add real panache and kerb appeal to Wimbledon Broadway.
