Driving low carbon transformation: Ibstock’s 2023 progress on alternative fuels and renewable energy
In 2023 our focus increased on strategic partnerships with suppliers and industry experts to explore alternative fuels as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions. One of our primary goals is to achieve a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and finding sustainable alternatives to natural gas is a key step in that journey.
As part of this strategy, we are actively working to assess the potential of hydrogen and syntheticgas across various sites, each with unique opportunities and challenges. These innovative fuel options could play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions, but implementation timelines and practical applications vary by location. Our close collaboration with key partners allows us to fully explore the operational and commercial viability of these alternatives. Some of our key partnerships include:
Repowering the Black Country Zero Carbon Hubs, focusing on creating a sustainable industrial future.
Collaborating with Gas Distribution Network companies like Cadent and initiatives such as the East Coast Hydrogen pipeline.
Engaging with Ceramics UK on the ‘Demonstrating Hydrogen for the Ceramics Sector’ project to explore how hydrogen can benefit our industry.
Partnering with Ceramics UK and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to address safety risks associated with hydrogen.
Beyond alternative fuels, Ibstock continues to expand our investment in renewable energygeneration. In 2023, we reviewed additional opportunities to build upon our existing 5MWh Leicester solar park and the recently installed 400kWh solar array at Atlas.
We are also proud to offer electric vehicle (EV) charging points at 32 of our sites, supporting cleaner transportation for our teams.
Another area of progress in 2023 was our commitment to electrifying our fleet. By year-end, we had transitioned 11% of our mobile plant fleet to electric vehicles. However, progress here has been slower than anticipated, particularly with larger plant vehicles, which present more complex challenges in terms of technology, supply, and cost.
To further reduce our reliance on diesel and other fossil fuels for on-site operations, including pumps and mobile plant equipment, we plan to develop an internal Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) policy in 2024. This initiative will be another step forward in creating a more sustainable, low-carbon future at Ibstock.
At Ibstock, our ongoing commitment to carbon reduction and sustainability continues to drive our actions, ensuring we are leading the way in the construction materials sector as we build a cleaner, greener tomorrow.
