Buildable
Originally constructed in 1990, the building underwent an extensive development in 2016/17. During the refurbishment, the building was extended by 1 metre on the previous footprint, taking the overall size to 266,000 sq ft.
Brick Faced GRC overcame the challenges faced by heavier alternatives of traditional brick or brick faced pre-cast which were cantilevering off the existing structure under the proposal for extending the existing floor space.
Designable
As a backdrop to the Grade II Listed Barbican Estate the carefully considered design is sympathetic to its Brutalist aesthetic, with a mixture of textures and surfaces, particularly the grey European handmade bricks.
Sustainable
This was our first Brick Faced GRC scheme and the refurb saw full replacement to the existing facades. A BREEAM certificate of excellence was achieved for the Grade A building.
